In the south of Spain, not very
far from the fabulous beaches of Costa del Sol, lies the ski
resort of Sierra Nevada. High above the tree line, at an altitude
of 6300', Sierra Nevada is the southernmost ski resort in
Europe.
The slopes here are vast and
open facing mostly north to the east and west, providing excellent
snow conditions from November until May on over 30 miles of
prepared pistes.
Site of the 1996 and 1997 World
Cup Finals and candidate for the Alpine World Championships;
it is suitable for all categories of skiers, however, it is
especially recommended for the beginner and intermediate skier.
The runs are wide and provide great opportunities for nice
cruising journeys for the recreational skier. Cross country
skiers will also find much to their liking with about 6 miles
of prepared trails and many possibilities to explore on their
own. In general, the emphasis in Sierra Nevada is on enjoyment.
It is not a resort for the hot-dogger or speed skier, but
rather is a place where the more cultured skier would go knowing
that some of the time will be spent relaxing, basking in the
sun, and enjoying the great Spanish food. But don't have any
misconceptions, this is a ski resort, and it has a lot in
its favor.
From the Pyrenees in the north
down to the Sierra Nevada Range in Andalusia, Spain's ski
resorts cover the country, with top quality installations
and hotel and leisure facilities to match. A wide spectrum
of packages and rates accounts for the unprecedented boom
in this sport in recent years
